Want to know what essentials are needed for yoga? What you need for yoga at home or bring to yoga class? What to wear and what equipment is needed for yoga?...Well, you’re in luck. In our last vlog we talked Yoga Mats 101, this time we run through other practical things that you may or may not need in a yoga class or while practising yoga at home. ‘Yoga Foundations’ FAQs - All the answers to your yoga class questions! These are the questions that I’ve been asked as a yoga teacher, and often wonder myself as a yoga student - So whether you’re new to yoga, an experienced yoga practitioner, or somewhere in between we’ll lay the foundations for our yoga practice, wherever we are on our journey… Here’s something I always get asked about: What do I actually NEED for yoga class?Click the video below to watch the 6 minute Q&A session with me, or scroll to read the notes… What are the best clothes to wear for yoga?Well really... it’s entirely up to you what you wear! So long as your clothing is safe, practical and comfortable for movement. Personally, I tend to prefer to wear clothes that are super comfortable for gentle movement - light, soft, really comfortable natural feeling clothing that feels really good to move in and allows my skin to breathe. For me, thick tight lycra ‘work-out gear’ generally doesn’t do that and can feel non-breathable and constrictive at times (but if it feels good for you - go for it!) I typically prefer cotton or similar materials, and not necessarily always labelled as ‘yoga gear’. A good feeling basic wide necked t-shirt can often do just fine and doesn’t have to break the bank. Where can I buy comfortable yoga clothes?“I usually shop for my loose fitting cotton t-shirts and super soft sports bras at places like H&M - they’ve a conscious range now too which is a double win as helps the planet as well as your pocket” 🌍 For leggings, again - there are loads of options out there. In the cooler months I do tend to find slightly thicker leggings more preferable for staying warm, and also for outdoor yoga, as here in Wales you never know how the weather can turn! Some of my favourite leggings are my gorgeous cosmic moon leggings from Katia Yoga as they’re really comfortable, keep you supported in all the right places, and look beautiful all at the same time (big moon / luna / chandra lover over here!) 🌜🌕🌛 In the warmer months, and for a lovely relaxed home practice, I absolutely LOVE a thinner more breathable harem style ‘yoga pant’. I have some BEAUTIFUL trousers from ‘Ganesha’ - like these repurposed from pashmina - Ganesha have shops in Cardiff, Bristol, Tenby, Hereford & Worcester + sell online. Their products are ethically sourced from India and Nepal. “Another comfortable, super soft, planet saving material I love to wear when practising yoga is bamboo. BAM are a great ethical UK based company (you can find out how they’re doing their sustainable bit here) They have a lovely range of loose fitting harem style trousers, a vast range of support leggings to choose from, and often have money-saving deals on so keep an eye out!” … They do socks too (bamboo socks, who knew?!) and in the chillier months I am a fan of toasty socks to keep the feet warm especially for quiet sitting at the beginning of a hatha yoga practice and for relaxation at the end. That extra comfort is always welcomed in my opinion for nice, comfy, cosy home yoga practice too. “I would say with socks however - just be mindful they’re not slippy and if you’re going to be doing any balancing postures (or any yoga from standing really) it’s advisable to remove socks, let the feet be free, and breeeathe!” How long are yoga classes? This depends where you go, what style of yoga class, and what sort of format the yoga classes are. Whether following yoga online, yoga on YouTube, or in-person classes - These can all vary from around 5 mins to 90 mins! The yoga classes I teach online and in-person in Barry are typically 60 Minute and 75 Minute Classes. In my opinion, 60 minutes is a good amount of time to settle into the hatha practice, sufficiently warm and loosen up with our ‘jattis’, explore some yoga postures and sequences with the breath, and settle down for a lovely relaxing shavasana. However - 75 minutes is even more beneficial as it allows for an extra long, super sweet relaxation with beautiful guided breathwork, energy balancing visualisations, melting away any remaining tension, really tuning into that centre point of our ‘action’ and ‘in-action’, really allowing that blissful light + floaty post-yoga-feeling to amplify. Ten fold ✨ And remember - ‘Yoga’ doesn't always have to be the physical practice. 5-10 mins of mindfulness or conscious breathing in the morning for example can do wonders and set you up right for the day. Making yoga manageable is key. Little and often is better than not at all 😉 Do I need to let you know about any aches, pains or injuries?Yes. When joining a new class your yoga teacher should ask you a few basic health questions or include a short health form before class, or at booking stage, to ensure they’re aware of anything going on (in the body or mind) and to assess (to the best of their ability) whether the class is suitable, or if any adjustments need to be kept in mind. That being said - if you have any health conditions or issues (diagnosed or undiagnosed) always seek advice from your GP before taking part in yoga, or any new form of exercise, so a medical professional can advise whether they think it is suitable for you. What else do I need to have with me at yoga class?
“Other than that - A willingness to meet yourself wherever you are on your yoga journey - and remember every day, and every time you show up to the mat, is different - so be kind and patient with yourself - ‘Do your best and leave the rest!’ as my great yoga teachers say!” Your next stepWatch this video for top yoga class practicality tips - and be sure to click ‘like’ + subscribe to my channel if you enjoy💜And remember - if you’re in need of some super comfy eco-friendly yoga pants, tops, socks, or leggings you can take advantage of the discount code for BAM Clothing: Just click this link to receive 20% off your first BAM order.
